Confini da Gauguin a Hopper

Canto con variazioni

From 11.10.2025 to 12.04.2026

exhibition curated by Marco Goldin – organised by Erpac and Linea d’ombra

The exhibition “Confini da Gauguin a Hopper. Canto con variazioni” explores, through more than 120 works including paintings and works on paper from important European and American museums and private collections, the concept of borders as physical, interior, symbolic and spiritual space in painting between the 19th and 20th century.

The exhibition opens with an introductory room with a strong emotional impact, featuring seven key works. The initial protagonist is the large canvas Märkische Heide (1970s) by Anselm Kiefer, symbol of a cosmic border between heaven and earth. Opposite, an extreme and intimate canvas by Mark Rothko, representing the inner border. In the centre, Vincent van Gogh‘s Self-portrait seals the reflection on identity and the self. This is followed by famous landscapes by Courbet, Monet and Nolde, where the natural border takes shape between sea, sky and gardens. Finally, a work by Edward Hopper introduces the theme of solitary figures confronting space and elsewhere.

The route is divided into three thematic macro-areas:

The sky
The sky becomes a borderland par excellence, from Friedrich, Turner and Constable to Boudin, Monet, Munch, Mondrian, Hodler, Hopper, Rothko and Nicolas de Staël. A narrative that crosses Romanticism, Impressionism and abstraction to recount the visible and invisible infinite.

Figures looking
A post-romantic exploration of the face and figure that stretches out to the border, between observation and introspection. From the American Hudson River School (Church, Durand, Kensett) to Winslow Homer, Böcklin, Van Gogh, Gauguin, up to Hopper, Diebenkorn and Andrew Wyeth, the individual becomes a meeting point between outer space and inner landscape.

More or less distant borders
Painting as a search for elsewhere: from Gauguin, with his travels from Martinique to Tahiti via Brittany, to Monet, Van Gogh, Cézanne and Bonnard in the countryside of Normandy, Provence and the South of France. A pictorial geography of dream, light and memory.

The exhibition proposes a journey between worlds, epochs and sensitivities that, through the theme of the border, return us to a profound reflection on the identity of man and the meaning of landscape in modern painting.
